3 Text As A Sign

Text as a sign: Wikipedia has an icon. Through this black lettered W on white background we suddenly are aware of everything it stands for: Social engagenment, free knowledge, unlimited, objective information, in various languages, worldwide. Barthes is operating with three terms, namely: “a work is conceived, perceived and received in its integrally symbolic nature is a text” If we take a look at the Wikipedia phenomenon we could use his tree terms to underline its symbolic value. An idea was conceived (free information for everybody), the idea was perceived and understood and it corresponded with the world and therefore used.
